Let me introduce myself. My name is Ryan Ragona, and I'm a software development manager at AWS, where I've worked since 2012. I work in the AWS Cryptography organization on the Key Management Service (KMS). I'm a self-taught software engineer, and I've been making software professionally since 2006. For most of that time I've worked in the games industry; for Sony, Disney, PopCap, Amazon, and Twitch. In early 2018 I exited the games industry to work for AWS Cryptography. My transition from games to cryptography is a story on its own, but I'm excited to be learning from the brilliant people around me as I ramp up in a new industry.
As a hiring manager I spend a lot of time reviewing resumes and conducting interviews, and I don't see as many self-taught programmers as I used to. The idea that anyone with enough curosity and determination can become a programmer is important to me. I owe a lot to the programmers who came before me and documented their journey. I used that content to get where I am today, and I want to contribute to that tradition. I know that writing will be valuable for me, and I'm hopeful that it will be valuable for other people as well.
Happy New Year, everyone.
