Let me introduce myself. My name is Ryan Ragona, and I'm a software development manager at AWS, where I've worked since 2012. I work in the AWS Cryptography organization on the Key Management Service (KMS). I'm a self-taught software engineer, and I've been making software professionally since 2006. For most of that time I've worked in the games industry; for Sony, Disney, PopCap, Amazon, and Twitch. In early 2018 I exited the games industry to work for AWS Cryptography. My transition from games to cryptography is a story on its own, but I'm excited to be learning from the brilliant people around me as I ramp up in a new industry.
The idea that anyone with enough curosity, determination, and support can become a programmer is important to me. I owe a lot to the programmers who came before me and documented their journey; the wealth of knowledge on the internet is how I got where I am today. I'm writing because I want to write, and because I want to contribute to that tradition. I know that writing will be valuable for me, and I'm hopeful that it will be valuable for other people as well.
Happy New Year, everyone.
